Description
Summary:The theoretical frameworks put out by Swiss analytical psychologist Carl Jung, particularly his examination of archetypes referred to as Jungian archetypes, have received considerable scholarly interest across a wide range of academic fields. Notwithstanding the multidisciplinary appeal of these ideas, their practical implementation as graphical or visual interpretations in the domain of art, specifically in the context of figurative paintings, is relatively constrained according to an analysis of the available literature. However, it is important to note that figurative paintings continually function as a potent artistic medium for the manifestation of artists' shared unconscious, encapsulating discernible characteristics linked to Jungian archetypes. This study offers a thorough analysis of figurative paintings, primarily emphasising their portrayal of archetypes according to Jungian theory. The four main archetypes explored are the persona, the shadow, the anima and animus, and the self. The objective of this study is to improve the understanding of these artworks by analysing the archetypes through their visual characteristics and intrinsic structures. This study employs the Jungian conceptual framework to analyse the paintings, revealing a significant and meaningful dimension inherent in the artworks. Consequently, the paintings are transformed into powerful objects that evoke a profound resonance within viewers at an archetypal level. © 2023 Universitat Jaume I. All rights reserved.
