Floating stone columns have been used occasionally to improve soft soils. However, the efficiency of the floating columns is questionable due to the untreated zone below the columns’ tip. This study aimed to investigate the effect of column length and area replacement ratio on the settlement performance of improved ground with floating stone columns. A small-scale unit cell model tank was used in this experimental study where the influential area of a single column was considered. Uniform loading was applied on the stone column improved soil, and the consolidation settlement was recorded. The results on the end bearing columns and floating column were compared. Laboratory results showed the beneficial impacts of larger area replacement and longer column on reducing the settlements and increasing the consolidation rate. The results were further compared with existing solutions where good agreement was obtained. The experimental findings presented in this study contributed to a better understanding of the behavior of large group floating stone columns. © 2024 The Authors.
