This paper presents the usage of a boost Active Power Factor Correction (APFC) converter for Power Factor Correction (PFC) and harmonic current mitigation. In this paper, various controllers regulate the converter operation under two different conditions which are ideal and distorted voltage supplies. A double-loop control algorithm regulates the operation of the boost APFC in both conditions. The outer loop is responsible for regulating the dc output voltage using a Proportional-Integral (PI) voltage controller. Instead, the inner loop indirectly regulates the ac input current using a conventional hysteresis, bandless hysteresis or PI current controller. By applying the control algorithm, the APFC is capable of supplying constant dc output voltage to the load. At the same time, the shape of the ac input current is fully sinusoidal and in phase with the ac supply voltage. Hence, the percentage of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) level of the input current waveform complies the IEEE 519 Standard. All simulation results from MATLAB/ Simulink have been presented and verified the capability of the proposed boost APFC converter with the double-loop control algorithm in executing PFC and harmonic current improvement. © 2020 IEEE.
